Worried About Your Baby’s Dry Skin?

Is your baby’s skin always dry? If yes, you are likely worried and have applied some sort of lotion or cream to hydrate the skin and reduce the dryness.

Dryness is a common issue experienced by many babies in Singapore. Most times, the reason for the dryness is because of sensitivity. As you know, the skin of babies is very sensitive. What’s more, it could be reacting to some of the ingredients in skincare products. Dehydration and some skin conditions could also be the cause of the dryness.

Most of the time, the dryness is temporary and will clear up without treatment. However, if for some reason it doesn’t, you should consider applying moisturizer on the dry areas.

In this article, we will be looking at some reasons why moisturizers are the best remedy for dry skin in babies.

Baby Moisturizers – Are They Really Effective?

Moisturizers are excellent products that can help address and prevent skin issues that are common among babies.

With a good moisturizer, it will be easy to combat dryness, skin peeling, eczema, rash and so on.

Of course, there are different types of moisturizers on the market. To ensure that you get the best result, you should opt for one made specifically for babies.

Be sure to avoid moisturizers that are heavily scented or contain ingredients that may irritate the skin of your baby.

How to Prevent Dryness

Dryness can be caused by a plethora of reasons. Below are a few of them.

Long Bath

Long baths are great and refreshing for adults but not for babies. Experts have found out that long baths can lead to the loss of natural oils present in the skin of babies. When this happens, dryness and peeling usually follow.

To prevent the loss of the essential oils present in your baby’s skin, you should limit your baby’s bath time to 15 mins or less.

Soap

Using a soap that contains harsh chemicals can also cause dryness and peeling. To be on the safe side, you should use non-scented mild soap.

Dehydration

Leaving your baby in a dry environment, whether indoors or outdoors, can cause dehydration. Dehydration is linked to skin issues like peeling, dryness, and break-in.

Regulating the moisture level of your room is one of the best ways to address this issue. Breast milk can also help prevent dehydration.

Using Alcohol-Based Baby Products

Before choosing any product for your baby, be it lotion or cream, you should check its label to see if it contains alcohol.

It is best you avoid lotions and creams that contain alcohol, as they can dehydrate the skin of your baby.

Final note

Babies have fragile skin that is prone to skin issues like dryness, peeling, and so on. Most of the time, these issues occur naturally and clear up on their own. However, if they don’t clear up, you should consult a paediatrician to narrow down the cause of the issue. To help address the issue, they may recommend a high-quality lotion for newborns.
