What Can’t I Eat If I’m A Vegetarian?

What exactly am I not able to eat on a vegetarian diet? I know no meat (obviously) but can I still drink milk and eat eggs, cheese, and butter? Do I need to take some kind of vitamins if i’m a vegetarian? Is it any healthier than a non-vegetarian diet? What are some good vegetarian recipes or sites for them? Thanks!!

  1. Vegans/Vegetarians have no more reason to use multivitamins than omnivores. If you eat a varied and balanced diet there is no reason to, but as a very minor precaution, if at all.
    Vegans have far less risk of suffering cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke. Omnivores consume excess cholesterol just about everyday of their lives because ALL cholesterol from food is excess. Heart disease is usually diagnosed in middle aged people but it begins in childhood. Cholesterol is found in ALL animal products including beef, pork, poultry, fish/seafood, milk/dairy, and eggs.
    If you want to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian, the transition should be quite simple. Almost all meats have widely available commercial replacements. All that you have to do is replace any flesh in your diet (beef, pork, poultry, seafood) with meat analogs or just leave it out altogether.
    You should keep in mind that a journey such as this can be quite short but should just be the beginning of a longer one to a plant-based diet with no animal products. This is because of the reality of factory farming in which animals that are kept alive to produce milk, eggs, etc suffer much more than animals that are raised to a certain weight and then slaughtered.http://www.veganoutreach.org/whyvegan/http://meat.org

    Two extremely important examples of this are that you should never speak to someone about Vegetarianism/veganism without their consent and genuine interest or as a comment on what they are eating AND your dietary beliefs should never be used as an introduction or explanation of who you are as a person. Veg*ism should be something that comes up AFTER people get to know you and they offer you a situation that makes it confusing to withhold the information/dicussion. Also, if you are presented something that you choose not to eat or you are
    ordering food/eating together somewhere/picking the best place to eat.
    When you you hold off on the subject until it’s necessary and then act like it isn’t a big deal at all, people are usually surprised and WAY more interested and curious than if you were to bring it up when someone’s eating or just using it as a conversation starter.
    Just to clear things up, the vegetarian/Vegan Diet is not composed of salads, vegetables, fruit and fake meat.

    Being vegan can be an art, one whose challenge is to take things that involve the suffering of the innocent and change them into something free of cruelty.
    Technically the term “vegetarian” does imply that you don’t consume anything that comes from the body of an animal that requires killing it.     The best thing to remember is to take your time so that for example: when you are comfortable not eating beef and pork you can then give up chicken when you are sure you can make the commitment permanently.
    Depending on your age or reliance on parents or regional options, it may not be best to give yourself a label. The important thing is to do your best to make progress and be committed to your compassion towards animals. Never put your focus onto what you or other people use to describe yourself.
    If you meet someone that talks down to people for eating meat, dairy, etc or to you because they think they are “more veg” than you, laugh in their face and tell them they are a disgrace to the entire philosophy. People like this only hurt the idea of veg*ism AND the animals. The point of all of this is to live compassionately and and as free from cruelty as you can, all the while maintaining your health and a positive attitude. People who don’t maintain either, need not open their mouths and represent our beliefs.

    I’m vegan and these are some of my favorite things to eat:
    Breakfast: bananas, cream of wheat with brown sugar and soy butter, cereal, pancakes or french toast with real maple syrup, vegan “sausage” patties, smoothies.
    Lunch: VEGAN “SAUSAGE” SANDWICHES, sandwiches with vegan deli slices(Tofurkey is the only one that’s kinda funky), fruit, dinner leftovers, couscous salad, vegan sushi, potato or pasta salad.
    Dinner: sloppy joes, “sausage” and gravy with homemade biscuits, Spaghetti and Trader Joe’s “meatballs” or TVP, lasagna, Thai pad see ew, pad khi mao(drunkard’s noodles), tofu+eggplant with basil sauce, yellow thai curry with tofu or vegan chikn and veggies and jasmine rice, Indian dal with homemade roti or dosai, channa masala, aloo gobi, vegetable or minestrone soup, pizza, STEAMED “PORK” BUNS with potstickers or spring rolls

    What you eat depends on what kind of vegatarian you are.
    1. LACTO Vegetarians
    They eat no flesh of any kind. Their diet consists of fruit and vegetables and dairy products(vegetarian cheese only)
    2. LACTO-OVO-VEGETARIANS
    They eat the same as the lacto vegetarians but also include eggs in their diet.
    3. VEGANS
    They eat only plant food.They eat no flesh, no eggs and no dairy products. Some will eat honey but not others.
    4. FRUITARIANS
    They eat only fruits,nuts and seeds.(This includes the fruit of vegetables such as tomatoes and courgettes. However they never eat the roots of plants such as carrots and potatoes)
    It takes work to eat a healty and balanced diet, no matter what you eat. Take a multi vitamin every day.

    my favorites are
    - that Vegan is a short term for vegetarian – ah no
    - that vegetarian diets lack protein and you can get it in a vitmin, HAHA
    I like alfyakuza’s answer the best….well said.
    My personal opinion, you cannot call yourself a vegetarian if you eat any meat – this includes fish. I have it when people say I’m a vegetarian but I eat fish – because then no, you are not a vegetarian.

  5. Vegetarians still eat eggs, butter and drink milk. Vegans don’t do any of that stuff. Theres many vegetarian recipes as well as Vegan recipes on the net. Since you didn’t specify what you like to eat it’s better you look for what you want.

    You can eat anything you want, you choose not to eat certain things. Your decisions should be based on your beliefs and not on a label.
    If you want to be a strict vegetarian you need to be aware of hidden animal products, like whey, gelatin, rennet.
    Gelatin – is produced from the remains of the slaughter industry.
    Rennet is an enzyme that is more readily available after a slaughter, although it can be derived from a vegetable source. It is found in cheaper cheeses.
    Whey is derived from dairy – a concern for vegans.
    If you have a healthy diet you do not need vitamins.

  8. It is a personal choice if you still want to eat eggs and consume dairy. If you choose to be a vegetarian you’re still “allowed” to do that. To be labeled a Vegan you wouldn’t eat any dairy, or eggs…nothing from an animal. The major thing lacking from a veg diet is protein. You can get this by taking different multi-vitamins (Centrum, etc), but also from eggs and beans. (EDIT: If you have a BALANCED vegetarian diet then you will not suffer from lack of protein. If you don’t know what you’re doing then you can definitely be lacking and need to take a supplement, as many people rely on red meats to get the majority of their protein) Soy is also a great source of protein, found in soy milk, tofu, etc. I have been a vegetarian for 6 years and I really don’t eat tofu- the texture is a little funky for me. Everyone always thinks that’s all Vegetarians eat! I love shopping at Trader Joe’s- they have the BEST vegetarian and organic food. I also use allrecipes.com and just search for vegetarian recipes so you can see how they’re rated and stuff before you make them. Going veg is a great move, you’ll feel the change in your body! And you’ll also probably get a lot of crap for it, so it’s definitely something you have to feel passionate about to stick to.

    P.S. Vegetarianism is NOT unhealthy! It’s actually 100 times better for you than eating meat. Our bodies were not made to consume meat. We have much shorter and softer fingernails than animals and pathetically small “canine” teeth. In contrast, carnivores all have sharp claws and large canine teeth capable of tearing flesh. Also, natural meat eaters have very short intestines to pass meat quickly. We have long intestines to allow the body more time time to break down fiber and absorb the nutrients from a plant-based diet. And also, the fat from red meats stay in our system for YEARS before it is completely broken down. So, I’ve been a veg for 6 years now…by body was just cleared of all meat residue LAST YEAR. Gross. That’s just skimming the surface…there are plenty more facts to back me up. I just couldn’t read someone calling vegetarianism an “eating disorder” and not respond. That is just ignorance.

  9. Watch out for all the slaughter by-products such as geletine. You need to be sure that any processed foods you eat do not contain these.
    About 85% of processed food (inc cheese, yogurt, cakes, ready-meals etc ) contain slaughter -by-products. but it doesn’t take long to get used to knowing where the ingredients come from and which manufacturers are good or bad
    you do not need a multi-vitamin.
    A balanced vegetarian diet does not require any supplements.

    a vegetarian wont eat meat
    vegans dont eat anything to do with animals – no milk or eggs or cream or gelatine – that means no haribo!
    although there are dairy alternatives for milk and cream made from soya beans

    Vegan is short for vegetarian. There are many kinds of Vegetarians. Some are ovo, lacto, etc., in that they choose or don’t choose to eat eggs, milk, butter, etc. (anything that comes from animals). A vitamin supplement is always a good idea whether you’re a vegetarian or not. There are probably lots of good vegetarian websites that include recipes, etc., that you can check out. Good luck.

    I think everyone’s explained that you can’t eat meat (any type) but also remember that you can’t eat anything that comes from meat. That means products like soups which can contain chicken broth, anything chicken or meat flavored. For example, you can’t eat gravy because that is made from something that comes from meat. Always read labels!

    Vegetarians don’t eat meat and Vegans don’t eat (or drink) any animal by-products including milk and eggs and cheese. If you are vegetarian, you still have to decide if you will eat fish or not since a few vegetarians don’t consider fish to be meat. As long as your diet is varied you won’t have to take vitamins. Yes, a vegetarian diet is way more healthy than a carnivores’ diet. Of course, a Vegan’s diet is more healthy than a vegetarians but it all depends on how much you need your cheese and milk.

    Vegains cannot have any products that come froma animal, Vegitarians can, the only vitamine i would recomend is d and b. Other than that take some protime tablets and your fine.
    But remmber man did not evolve to the top of the food chain to just eat plants. Being a vegitarian can be risky and have long term effects

    Depends on the type of vegetarian, the level you want to go to. There’s vegans … all sorts. Google it.
    To tell the truth Vegetarianism is an eating disorder – homo sapiens eat meat. That’s what our digestive tracts were made for. We’re omnivorous.
    Sorry I can’t really help more … just think Vegies are wrong. You’re eating the rainforests. :)

    im just commenting to say thanks to all these comments apart from some that dont make sense but i’m also just starting to become a vegetarian and its quite hard to start with because im only 12 and no one i know is a vegetarian so thanks. !
