Vegetarian On A Budget
By
The budgets of many families, one of the biggest food expenses is often meat. So in theory at least becoming a vegetarian should be an outstanding financial maneuver. In theory, if all you ate was rice and vegetables, should be able to live for very little.
But theory and reality are often very distant from each other. Because vegetarian life culture has developed so many high quality food to fill the void left by a good steak or a plate of barbecue ribs, you can spend as much or more on your vegetarian lifestyle as you did when you were a carnivore. The high cost of living as a vegetarian is not all attributable to gourmet foods however.
The truth is that if you are going to live day to day and month to month to a vegetarian diet, not only needs some high quality food to replace lead to a whole group of foods from your diet, you need variety. Quality is necessary because their health on the line if you do not receive adequate nutrients. Diversity is necessary because if you get bored with the vegetarian lifestyle, you can quit and leave. And nobody wants that.
Another reason that the cost of the vegetarian diet is often greater than a "normal" diet comes from the fact that Vegetarians are a minority. So the vegetarian foods and vegetarian restaurants are only rare. And to make a profit, these specialty stores must charge a lot because they are specialty stores. Unfortunately, although we see the vegetarian community as supportive, if you will be able to afford the vegetarian lifestyle, you're going to have to learn to reduce costs.
Reducing costs by eliminating purchases "boutique" markets and non-vegetarians eat out. Or at least it means significantly reduce eating out. You can buy fresh fruits and vegetables at farm markets or grocery stores that are as valid as vegetarian options such as those obtained as a specialty store. Using a good food processor and other means, may be cut, dice, boil and puree almost any type of vegetarian food that may be able to imagine getting into a restaurant. And at a much lower cost. Not only that, but the remains can go into a compost pile to make compost for your garden when you can grow your own vegetables next spring.
"The producer to consumer" market that often appears as a farmer's market is a great way to save lots of money too because they are buying their product directly to the farmer and the grocer cut off the entire circuit. One way to ensure that every opportunity to buy cheap products is to work as a community. Get a dozen vegetarian families working together forever in search of a great buy. You can find a small farmers market or roadside stand that is selling products well below the prices of grocery store. Another might find a farmer who basically give their food away just to clear the field. With a little coordination, it could field an army of vegetarians to grab the bargains while they are fresh and the kitchen of values around the world with fresh, low cost.
These are just some of the many ways you can find to save money on their vegetarian foods as much and still quality but with less cost. When buying with intelligence and shopping for bargains, you can live the vegetarian life and feel good, not only because it is healthy, you're smart.
