Eating like a vegetarian is never the answer to losing weight. When being one, you actually have more of a chance to gain more. The diet mainly consists of starches (pastas, bread, cereals, pizzas, ect.) Vegetarians don't normally eat healthy anyways and don't have a lot of vegetables in their diets.
Maybe you can try stir fry with a little bit of tofu fried in it.

Drink a glass of water before your meal. In that way you can control the amount of food you eat.
Go for long walk every day.
Any kind of salad with out dressing is good.
Steamed vegetables are very good. Natural yogurt.
Recipe: half a Cabbage cut into thin and inch and half long
              1 onion chopped
jeera seeds and mustard seeds quarter spoon
               salt for your taste
               curry leaves
               turmeric power
               oil table spoon
Place a non stick pan on the cooker and pour oil. Then add onion curry leaves, jeera seeds,.mustard seeds and stir for awhile.Add cabbage, turmeric and salt. Stir well. Add just a little water and cover the pan for 3 minutes. (If you desire you can add shredded coconut.) Just before you take the pan off the cooker make sure that the water dried off.You can eat this with boiled rice with any other curries.

I found many good recipes at vegweb and at the Eden Foods web site. If you have a Whole Foods Market in your area, you can get recipes there or on their site.
Replacing some of your higher fat meals is a great idea, and it saves money (for me at least). Meats are expensive!
Good luck!
