Cystic Fibrosis And Becoming Vegan, Would It Be Ok?

By admin

I have Cystic Fibrosis. Recently i became interested in becoming a Vegan, my mother doesn’t think it would be ok at all because she says it couldn’t provide me with enough nutrition and I have a hard time keeping enough weight on now even by eating meat and such and eating large meals. Does anyone know if actually could be ok to do? Can my mother be proven wrong? Is there a way I could be vegan and still get enough nutrition? I’m a teenager.

Sorry to tell you this, but your mother is probably right on this issue. While I won’t go so far as to say there’s no way a CF patient can become a Vegan, I should tell you that it’s a very bad idea. Vegetarian diets are great for most of modern society specifically because they’re low in calories but still filling, making them great for people trying to lose weight. With CF, though, as you probably know, you’ve got enough problems absorbing the nutrients in food and getting the calories, so throwing a low calorie diet into the mix is only going to make things worse.
So, in summary, I don’t think going vegetarian is advisable, but if you are really serious about it, I’d recommend speaking to your doctor or a dietician, and they might be able to suggest a high calorie Vegan Diet.

Dont listen to others who say that you cant., you can but you need to know what vitamins you will be lacking and how to pick up on the fat and calories. I have CF and I was vegetarian for 13 years before going Vegan 3 years ago. Since then my lung function has improved a ton. With that said I did a lot of research before going vegan (I mean a lot), its a big decision and yes you should talk to your nutritionist. My nutritionist has advised against it when I began my conversion to veganism, now I am educating her on the Vegan Diet and how to get the fat and calories I need. We work as a team on my visits to make sure that I am doing what I need to and honestly I have never felt better.
