<h2>How to Take a Vitamin? The Do’s and Don’ts</h2>
<p>It is advisable to take a single, balanced multivitamin every other day, or half a vitamin taken daily. Even a poor diet gets 50 to 75 percent of RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance), and there&rsquo;s no need to supplement beyond this. There are some groups of people who really can benefit from a vitamin/mineral supplement: children under two years of age, and other children and elderly people who eat a limited number of foods; people on diets that contain fewer than 1200 calories a day; pregnant women; strict <a href="http://www.vegetarianvitaminsguide.com/vegan-supplements/vegetarians">Vegetarians</a> who eat no dairy products or eggs and people with certain illnesses that seriously impair the absorption of nutrients. If you are on the lowest-calorie version of Nutripoints, you might also benefit from the half-a-vitamin-daily regime.</p>
<p>The following are do&rsquo;s and don&rsquo;ts for taking vitamins:</p>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do take only a vitamin that offers close to, but no more than 100% of RDAs for all nutrients. If the levels are a bit higher, they are not dangerous, but they are a waste. If they are a lot higher (some vitamins contain 1000% of the RDA for one vitamin, and 20 % of another), they are really unbalanced and should be avoided.</p>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&rsquo;t go for the highest-priced vitamin. Claims that vitamins are &ldquo;natural&rdquo;, as opposed to &ldquo;synthetic,&rdquo; really have no bearing on their effectiveness, and a national brand name may be no better than a much cheaper store brand.</p>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Do check the expiration date on any vitamins you buy. They will become ineffective over time and are best used when fresh. Store them in a cool, dark, dry place.</p>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Don&rsquo;t waste money on vitamins that contain substances for which there is no proven nutritional need. Lecithin and vitamin B15 are two examples of such substances. Inclusion of the following supplements only raises the price without any nutritional benefit: arsenic, carnitine, choline, cobalt, coenzyme Q, lecithin, nickel PABA, silicon, tin, vanadium, vitamin P and vitamin Q.</p>
<p>-&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Unless you are under doctor&rsquo;s orders don&rsquo;t take vitamin that contact substances otherwise useless or dangerous. Fluoride, iodine, and phosphorous are readily available in water, salt, and protein foods. Chloride, potassium, and sodium are easily obtained from the normal diet. Molybdenum isn&rsquo;t a recommended mineral in supplements because its toxicity outweighs the problem of a possible deficiency. Moreover, even moderate amounts of molybdenum can cause a copper deficiency.</p>
<p>-&nbsp; Do take you vitamins with a well-balanced meal. Although there is evidence that some minerals are best absorbed on an empty stomach, the final evidence is not in, and most vitamins seem to be best absorbed when taken with foods.</p>

<p><b>How can I ease into a <a href="http://www.vegetarianvitaminsguide.com/vegan-supplements/vegan-2">Vegan</a> lifestyle?</b><br />

<p>I&#8217;ve been a vegetarian for about 6 years and I&#8217;ve recently joined a Vegan/Vegetarian group and have heard so much about being vegan that I want to try it myself. However, I am a big fan of egg / cheese / milk. I have been drinking soy milk for about 2 years, but not strictly. </p>
<p>I think I can ease into removing the dairy products, but how about all the delicious things, like cupcakes.. or cookies.. or chocolate! I know its great for the environment &#038; my body and I really want to give it a chance. But when I think about all the little things that come with traces of dairy products.. its overwhelming. </p>
<p>Any tips on how I can ease into it without going into fatty-food withdrawal? <img src='http://www.vegetarianvitaminsguide.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif' alt=':P' class='wp-smiley' title="Vegetarian Vitamin D Supplement" />  Also, what vitamins should I pick up as supplements for what I&#8217;ll miss. <p>Hey! I recently went vegan after being a vegetarian who ate cheese and eggs all the time. I&#8217;ve actually found that there are more things that I can eat than I expected. </p>
<p>I figured it would be hard to find vegan chocolate &#8211; until I looked at some labels and realized that pretty much no dark chocolate has dairy in it. It&#8217;s just milk chocolate you won&#8217;t be able to have. For me, anyway, I don&#8217;t mind one bit as long as dark chocolate is still on the table. Most packaged cookies are also vegan (likely because it&#8217;s more expensive to use dairy) &#8211; iced oatmeal cookies, Oreos, etc. don&#8217;t contain milk. I was also worried about finding bread, but most bread is vegan. You won&#8217;t be able to find many vegan cupcakes at bakeries, but you can make bakery treats yourself pretty easily. Sorbet is also a great alternative to ice cream if you&#8217;re at someplace like Baskin &#038; Robbins, and there are also soy varieties that I haven&#8217;t yet tried.  </p>
<p>As for the substitutes, I&#8217;ve switched to soymilk for cereal, and vegan butter, which actually tastes pretty much exactly like real butter. I buy Earth Balance buttery spread at Trader Joe&#8217;s. Many packaged/frozen things are vegan. Amy&#8217;s Kitchen products you probably already know about, but they&#8217;re great and have many vegan options. There are always frozen stir-fry mixes and pasta dishes that you can pick up for a quick meal. Trader Joe&#8217;s also makes a line called Indian Fare that are curry dishes in packets that you drop in boiling water to heat up &#8211; several of their dishes are vegan and they are delicious! </p>
<p>Honestly, I haven&#8217;t had too much trouble making the transition, though I was just like you. I ate cheese at basically every meal, I ate eggs for breakfast frequently, milk with cereal, etc. I thought I could never go vegan &#8211; until I read the articles that motivated me to do so for health and ethical reasons, and actually started trying to do it. Once I made the decision to switch and started putting it into practice, it hasn&#8217;t been an issue. </p>
<p>I also thought the switch would be harder than it has been. Once I started eating vegan and got so much energy back, I have not once craved dairy. I&#8217;ve also found that I&#8217;m starting to crave different stuff than I used to. Lately brown rice has seemed like the tastiest thing in the world to me. Whereas before I might have had cheese ravioli with pesto and more cheese on top (oh my gosh! so much cheese!) now I find myself longing for some bok choy and brown rice or a nice big salad. I eat so many more fruits and vegetables now, and I really feel a lot better. I used to have no energy, now I have tons. I used to need 10 hours of sleep &#8211; now I find myself waking refreshed after 7 or 8.  </p>
<p>I have been taking a multivitamin regularly. The only thing you really have to look out for is vitamin B12, everything else you should get pretty easily from a <a href="http://www.vegetarianvitaminsguide.com/vegan-supplements/vegan-diet-3">Vegan Diet</a> rich in fruits, veggies, and whole grains. Pretty much everything you need you can get from plant-based foods, but take a B12 supplement or a multivitamin. Or, if you like Cheerios, try Multi-Grain Cheerios &#8211; they&#8217;re fortified with 100% of your iron and B12, two of the hardest things to get as a veg*n. </p>

People at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency include strict vegetarians, elderly people, and people with increased vitamin B12 requirements associated with pregnancy, thyrotoxicosis, hemolytic anemia, hemorrhage, malignancy, liver or kidney disease.</p>
<p>Vitamin B12 deficiency is a cause of megaloblastic anemia. In this type of anemia, red blood cells are larger than normal, and the ratio of nucleus size to cell cytoplasm is increased. There are other potential causes of megaloblastic anemia, including folate deficiency or various inborn metabolic disorders. If the cause is B12 deficiency, then treatment with B12 is the standard approach.</p>
<p>Pernicious anemia (blood abnormality) is a form of anemia that occurs when there is an absence of intrinsic factor, a substance normally present in the stomach. Vitamin B12 binds with intrinsic factor before it is absorbed and used by the body. An absence of intrinsic factor prevents normal absorption of B12 and may result in pernicious anemia. Pernicious anemia treatment is usually lifelong supplemental vitamin B12 given either intramuscularly, intranasally, or by mouth.</p>
<p>There is evidence that intramuscular injections of 5mg of vitamin B12 given twice per week might improve the general well being and happiness of patients complaining of tiredness or fatigue.</p>

<p>I am anemic and found out today that my vitamin D3 levels are way down. My doctor wants me to take D3 supplements in addition to a prescription iron pill. After some research, I know that cholecalciferol comes from the wool of sheared sheep. I am not vegan, just vegetarian. I am deciding how I feel about taking the supplements. It is similar to drinking milk as far as vegetarian/vegan views go, I think. The animals don&#8217;t die, but I&#8217;m sure they are not treated well, and the shearing is harmful to their health. I am going to make my own decision, but I&#8217;d like to hear what other vegetarians think. I know vegans would not support the supplements and tell me to get more sun for vitamin D3. I have been pretty sick, however, and the sun just isn&#8217;t cutting it. So, vegetarians, what are your thoughts on supplements made from sheep wool?

<p>If it is for your health, and there is no other alternative, than you should take it. We strive to make as minimal an impact on the lives of animals as possible, but most people are not martyrs for the cause. It is not like you are taking this supplement b/c another is too expensive, tastes bad, etc. there is no other choice.</p>
<p>Some people also choose to get D2, as that can be vegan. While taking D2 it is a good idea to still try and get 15 min of sunlight daily.</p>

<p>you may need proteins and sometimes irons, i suggest you do the same as me and take a mixture of vitamins/minerals/irons all in one tablet, it really helps keep me healthy and i get all the vitamins i need, even if i miss lunch!<br />

<p>Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common problem throughout the world, especially for the elderly. Vitamin B12 deficiency can present itself as hematologic vitamin B12 deficiency or hide itself as asymptomatic vitamin B12 deficiency.</p>
<p>Sources of Vitamin B12</p>
<p>The human body needs vitamin B12 or cobalamin for it to function properly. The human body needs vitamin B12 for the formation of red blood cell. Vitamin B12 is also vital in keeping a healthy nervous system. Any B12 deficiency can lead to serious impairment and health issues.</p>
<p>Vitamin B12 is most readily found in animal proteins such as those found in red meat, poultry, fish, eggs and dairy. Plants and vegetables contain only smaller amounts of vitamin B12 derived from microorganisms. Ovalactovegetarians and lactovegetarians get vitamin B12 in their milk and eggs. However, strict vegetarians and vegans have few sources of naturally occurring vitamin B12 and are advised to include in their diet foods that are fortified with vitamin B12.</p>
<p>Vitamin B12 Absorption</p>
<p>The body has a complex method of absorbing and recycling vitamin B12. Any defect in the absorption process can lead to vitamin B12 deficiency.</p>
<p>One place where absorption takes place is in the stomach. The gastric acid and pepsin in the stomach help remove vitamin B12 from animal proteins. The reason it is important to masticate food well is that vitamin B12 binds readily with salivary R protein for absorption.</p>
<p>In addition, pancreatic enzymes or an alkaline pH will react with vitamin B12 to increase its rate of absorption by the body. These help to break down the R protein-cobalamin complex. Then, prior to absorption by the body, vitamin B12 binds to intrinsic factor (IF) to form an IF-cobalamin complex.</p>
<p>Conditions Affecting the Body&#8217;s Absorption of Vitamin B12</p>
<p>If you have a medical condition that affects your body&#8217;s vitamin B12 absorption, it is important to consume extra vitamin B12. However, if you do not have a medical condition affecting vitamin B12 absorption and you simply do not consume a lot of vitamin B12 in your diet for a variety of reasons (e.g., if you are a vegan), then taking supplements is necessary to prevent vitamin B12 deficiency.</p>
<p>Any health condition that might decrease the body&#8217;s ability to digest food proteins properly can be a cause of vitamin B12 deficiency. One common cause of this kind of health condition is failure of the body to release adequate gastric acid. This itself is a symptom that can be attributed to a number of other possible underlying health conditions.</p>
<p>If you have a condition such as pernicious anemia or if you have had a gastrectomy, you may be at risk for vitamin B12 deficiency. As mentioned previously, vitamin B12 absorption is a complex bodily process that can be hampered if any necessary compounds and bodily functions are not present. Vitamin B12 absorption happens when salivary R protein binds with intrinsic factors in the small intestine. If these intrinsic factors are not present, the absorption of vitamin B12 will fail. The natural result is vitamin B12 deficiency.</p>

<p>I&#8217;m really sorry to hear of your mother&#8217;s deficiency. She may have problems absorbing and utilising the vitamin. I know meat eaters who have low levels of B12, it&#8217;s not a deficiency that only us veg*ns get.</p>
<p>The good news is that a lack of B12 can be alleviated with a B12 shot every 3 months. (See a medical professional about this).</p>
<p>Algae, seaweed and spirulina are NOT reliable sources of B12. The importance of this vitamin should never be underestimated because as you probably know, a deficiency can cause a whole host of problems, most notably neurological (nerve) damage.</p>
<p>Vegetarians CAN get plenty of vitamin B12 from cheese, milk, eggs, yogurt, enriched dairy free milks (like soya, oat, rice), and fortified breakfast cereals. Maybe your mother should see a nutritionist- she most probably needs B12 supplementation.</p>
