Background (Preamble):

中文版本請到本網頁下方點選
In recent headlines, the city of Ghent in Belgium has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint and has made the brave decision to ask its citizens to go meatless one day a week. Every Thursday will be veggie day.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8046970.stm
According to a 2006 report by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), entitled Livestock’s Long Shadow: it stated that livestock production is responsible for 18 percent of all greenhouse gas (ghg)emissions which is more than all the cars, trains and planes combined.
Due to the impact that meat has on the environment, we need to reduce our consumption of this carbon intensive product as an effective solution to the climate change crisis. This petition calls for Taiwanese officials to take action now that will show Taiwan’s commitment to tackling Climate Change.
We urge the government to promote every Monday as a day when the citizens of Taiwan will abstain from meat products in an effort to protect the environment and halt global warming.
We call on everyone’s support in expressing to Taiwanese officials the need for Taiwan to adopt and promote a meat free Monday.
So please sign this petition and forward it to your friends and family.

Please scroll down for English translation!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8046970.stm
———–
We are currently facing unprecedented global warming. Climate Change threatens us all, as individuals and as a planet. Taiwan is ranked 22nd in the world in terms of greenhouse gas (ghg) pollution, that’s a significant 1 % of total global ghg emissions.
According to a 2006 report by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), entitled Livestock’s Long Shadow: The report found that livestock production produces 18 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions, including 9 percent of all carbon dioxide emissions, 37 percent of methane, and 65 percent of nitrous oxide which is approximately 296 times more potent than CO2 as a global warming gas.
A study in 2008 concluded that the production of 2.2 lbs of beef would cause the same amount of carbon emissions as an average European car driving 155 miles. The amount of energy burnt was enough to light a 100watt bulb for almost 20 days.
Nobel Laureate, Dr. Rajendra Pachauri, head of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has stated, “Please eat less meat; meat is a very carbon intensive commodity …” and “The single action that a person can take to reduce carbon emissions is Vegetarianism.”
In recent headlines, the city of Ghent in Belgium has taken steps to reduce its carbon footprint and has made the brave decision to ask its citizens to go meatless one day a week.

My husband & I try to be as discreet as possible because we don't want to cause issues w/ other family members. We are Vegan for health reasons alone.

I can't afford being "discreet" about my choice, because I would be served meat or dairy in no time. If you're a vegan for only health reasons, maybe it won't matter to you as much if you get an occasional piece of meat or cheese in your meal, but for an ethical vegan this can really hurt feelings.

It's almost like asking ppl with alergies if they are discreet about it. They better not be for their own sake.

And another thing, I'm proud of my choice. I dont mind letting ppl know it is possible to be a vegan, happy and healthy. Why would I want to hide that? If I cause "issues" I can handle them pretty well. But ppl around me, my nearest friends and family have accepted it by now.

It is good that you are a vegan, though, even for your health.

I don’t sorry (have had a look as well) not much help but….I know that asda and tesco have now started selling vegan products- picked up some vegan cheese by mistake last week and they would prob be a lot cheaper than health food shops. You can pick up a lot of vegan friendly foods there very cheaply as well- like pulses, quorn products, rice, nuts and seeds, couscous oats etc.

Weird question.
Vegan just means no animals were used to make the food you eat.
So there are foods that are not made with animals that are bad for you. Fried anything, even if fried in vegetable Crisco! Sugary sweet processed food: Hostess cupcakes, Ding dongs, donuts (trans fats all the way – even vegetable oil can get trans fats just by heating it up!). Salty processed foods like potato chips, veggie burgers, and french fries.

Just because you order a cheese pizza and take off the cheese, you are a vegan, but then all you have left is white flour and salty tomato sauce for dinner. If you are going to be vegan, then bring on the vegetables! grains! legumes/beans! and of course fruit for dessert!

Yes or no, why, why not?
Thanks.
I don't disagree with you, i whole heartedly agree it can't cure cancer.
Ashley or whatever your name is YESTERDAY in a question you said you ate meat 5 times a day to keep your protein up for your muscle building?!
LOL

No. There has been no proof of any such thing. Basing beliefs on studies as opposed to actual scientific research leads to many misconceptions.

Although, a healthy diet, designation irrelevant, can lessen some health risks.

You know, many here like to talk about eating meat leading to colon cancer. But, when they make that statement they neglect to explain that the consumption of fruits, vegetables and fiber negates that risk. As of matter of fact, those studies usually won't mention that either. Why? Agenda. A study is simply a collection of data from a cross section of people. A limited # of specific questions are answered and these questions are aimed at promoting an idea before they're even answered. In the case of meat and health, a study doesn't differentiate between a meat eater who works in a coal mine or a vegetarian marathon runner for example. They are simply 2 people in the study. It doesn't differentiate between a meat eater with family genetic history of illness and a meat eater who eats only lean meats in moderation and exercises regularly. They are simply 2 people in the study. This is NOT scientific research. It's simply the statistical response to a skewed set of questions and we'll never know what info. was not included when the findings are published either.

I'd be surprised if any one of us has never taken a survey or answered a questionnaire where we had to choose an answer that really didn't fit us, but it was the closest one available. Or had to choose between 2 answers that both fit, but could only choose one as an answer. This is the fallibility of "studies". At the end of the day, the only answer you get from a study is "maybe".

I’ve been looking all over the board, finding answers about becoming Vegan or vegetarian due to many factors including “health reasons”.

What are these “health reasons” specifically?
Is it just meat allergies?
Or is it another way of saying that you chose this lifestyle to eat healthier without the dependence on meat/animal products?

Let me put it this way…
All of the problems of a vegetarian diet (like possible lack of protein) are avoidable by making sure you’re still eating the right things.
Example: Lack of protein can be solved by eating things like rice and beans, or egg whites if you’re not fully vegan.

On the other hand, all of the problems NOT being a vegetarian (like increased chance for obesity), are avoidable as well, by, once again, making sure you’re eating the right things.
Example: Meat eaters are more likely to be obese, but it’s probably because specific ones aren’t watching what they eat much at all (whereas Vegetarians have to watch what they eat at least a little more just to be vegetarian). However, I personally have lost fat by eating lots of lean chicken breast…so eating the right meats can have the opposite effect, making you healthier.

Whether you are a vegetarian or not, watching what you eat, and eating healthy (possibly seeking out a nutritionist to assist you), will help you to be incredibly healthy.
Main point: You don’t NEED to eat meat to be healthy. You don’t NEED to refrain from eating meet to be healthy.
Final note: There may be cases where this isn't true, but you'll know if you're one of these people, and you'll probably be officially diagnosed with something by your doctor.

today, at my job the floor supervisor ordered tons of peperoni pizza, my co-workers were very pushy, telling me if i was going to take a slice, so to dont let them thing i'm a "freak" with food i took 5 slices, should i regret it? i'm really worried since i've been eating healthy and i think this is going to debalance my body, is my body able to tolerate it and auto clean it self?
How can i fix it, i feel like cleasing my body today.
Please help me, i feel intoxicated!

Well you gave in to peer pressure…
Only you know whether you regret it or not… Do you?
If you continue to willingly eat meat and cheese… Then you wouldn't be a Vegan (or a vegetarian). You would just be an omnivore that likes to eat healthy, but sometimes gives in to pizza.

When I first became a vegan… it was a little overwhelming. After about a week I decided to start eating dairy again. I felt so guilty and unhappy that my dairy eating veggie diet only lasted a few days before I went back to eating vegan.
I don't regret that experience because now I know that being a vegan is what's right for me. I could never go back to eating the way I did.
If you want to be a vegan, then just have more self-control. If you don't want to be a vegan… then that's entirely up to you.
I can't tell you what to do.

As far as feeling sick from eating meat/ cheese… The longer you are away from that junk the crappier (sicker) you are gonna feel when you put it back in your body.
And you may just get sick from the greasy nastiness that is pizza.

Whatever you decide to do, Good luck… just think of your pizza eating as a learning experience. You'll know what you want.
