Protect Yourself From The Dangers Of Spray Tanning

By Jenna Smith

Sunless tans especially by way of spray tanning have become very popular this decade. There are several reasons for the increase in popularity.

People are electing to do so because they believe that spray tanning is safe. While there is some merit to this, the fact is, it is not completely true.

The Food and Drug Administration regards the active ingredient in spray tanning solutions to be safe when applied topically on the skin. People interpreted such as statement as meaning spray tanning is safe.

Dihyroxyacetone might be safe when applied on the skin but it is dangerous if inhaled or if it comes in contact with the face, especially the eyes, lips and nostrils.

The advice given by the FDA is to wear eye goggles and to cover the lips whenever you enter a spray tanning booth. A person should also hold their breath to avoid inhalation. Don’t count on the tanning salon to advise you to do so because they are not obligated by law.

What is even more worrisome is that many spray tanning solutions also include additional chemicals that are dangerous to human health. Mercury is an example of such a dangerous chemical.

Unfortunately this information is often times ignored because the fallacy that spray tanning is safe dominates peoples’ perception of sunless tans.

And it could very well be but precaution most be exercised. Reading the label and understanding what chemicals are inside is very important.

The more aware a person is the less likely they will suffer negative consequences. Tanning salons won’t warn you about the dangers because if they did, they might lose a customer.

Listening to the FDA recommendations to protect your face, eyes, nostrils is very important to your health. Also avoid inhaling the dangerous fumes.

Common sense is a great thing and common sense should tell us that anything artificial is not necessarily better than something that is natural.

Excessive sun rays is indeed harmful to the skin but thinking that an artificial sunless tan is the solution is a wrong way of looking at things.

The fact is spray tanning is relatively new and it will take many years until will fully understand any repercussions from this sort of tanning.

The best advice for the meantime is to be careful when getting a sunless tan. Follow the advice of the FDA whenever you enter a spray tanning booth.
