Concerns Associated With Thrombosed Hemorrhoid

By Joel Maxford

A thrombosed hemorrhoid is one of the more severe cases of hemorrhoids as the hemorrhoid has become so large that it is possible for a blood clot to form. Most hemorrhoids that become thrombosed tend to be external and will appear bluish or purple in color. This type of hemorrhoid is extremely painful and needs to be treated as soon as possible. In order to find relief the hemorrhoid must be drained of blood.

There are many types of behavior that can be followed to alleviate the pain associated with thrombosed hemorrhoids. A few suggestions include making sure you are hydrated and avoiding dehydration, not straining during bowel movements, using stool softeners and laxatives for constipation, hemorrhoid cream, warm baths, eat foods like fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber, get regular exercise, empty your bowels the minute you feel the need, and avoid aggressive use of toilet paper.

The above treatments can help provide relief for the pain and itching due to the thrombosed hemorrhoid but they do not actually cure the hemorrhoid. You will need to have some sort of medical treatment to make the hemorrhoid go away.

All non-surgical methods such as the ones mentioned above may not actually cure your hemorrhoids. Normally if your hemorrhoids do not reduce back to normal size with non-surgical methods you may need to have surgery or another type of medical treatment.

Possibly the best treatment is to have the thrombosed hemorrhoid completely removed. This will decrease the chances of it recurring and will quickly get rid of the pain. There can be some bleeding and discomfort after the procedure while the area heals. There is a danger of infection so antibiotic cream is normally prescribed and warm baths can help relieve any discomfort. The removal of a hemorrhoid may take up to a few months to completely heal.

There are a few steps you will need to take to heal properly after having the thrombosed hemorrhoid removed. You may feel some discomfort until the area heals and you may notice some bleeding in your stool for a month or two after the procedure. To decrease the possibility of infection you should use an antibiotic cream for a few weeks after the surgery. Many times warm baths are suggested to ease the discomfort.

Many times if you experience acute pain you will need to have the blood clot excised from your hemorrhoids. However some emergency rooms do not like to perform this surgery and will use some of the following reasons why they can’t do the fairly simple surgery, this includes allergy to the local anesthetic used, known coagulopathy, systemic illness that would increase the risk of the procedure, perianal infection, portal hypertension, inflammatory bowel disease, or anorectal fissure.

The vast majority of the time your hemorrhoids will go away naturally but when they do not it is important to have them properly treated immediately so they will not escalate to a severe case of hemorrhoids such as thrombosed hemorrhoids.
